First political detainees of anti-war movement in Italy released

24. November 2002

Solidarity movement partially successful

In the aftermath twenty comrades of the anti-war protests of Nov 9 in Florence, Italy, have been taken into custody by the Italian state. Among them the leader of the South Italian anti-globalisation movement, Caruso, and several anti-imperialist, two belonging to the Anti-imperialist Camp.

The charges brought up against them are purely political ones like:

Political conspiracy to disturb the exertion of governmental functions
Subversive propaganda
Attack of constitutional organs
Instigation to disobedience to public order
Trespass against public buildings
Resistance to state power

The attack was design to hit the most consequent part of the movement. But should serve as a warning shot targeting at the same time the entire movement as these accusations could be reproached to any political activist.

The solidarity movement which sprung up all over Italy has reached that three comrades have been released among them Vittoria aged already 61. Furthermore four have been released into domiciliary arrest. However, the charges have not been dropped.

We need your international solidarity. Please send protest letter to (with copy to us):
