Free speech for Western apologists only

France cracks down on regime critics
21/1/2015 · by Glenn Greenwald
Glenn Greenwald became famous for publishing the case of Edward Snowden in The Guardian. We re-produce his recent article on the western instrumental misuse of free speech as it is courageously putting the finder in the wound. The text appeared in The Intercept, a media project co-founded by Greenwald.

France Arrests a Comedian For His Facebook Comments, Showing the Sham of the West’s “Free Speech” Celebration Forty-eight hours after hosting a massive march under the banner of free expression, France opened a criminal investigation of a controversial French comedian for a Facebook post he wrote about the Charlie Hebdo attack, and then this morning, arrested him for that post on charges of “defending terrorism.” The comedian,  Dieudonné, previously sought elective office in France on what he called an “anti-Zionist” platform, has had his show banned by numerous government officials in cities throughout France, and has been criminally prosecuted several times before for expressing ideas banned in that country.   The apparently criminal … [read more]

No, we are not defending Western civilization

Prefering Frantz Fanon to Charlie Hebdo

We anti-imperialists are not part of the clash of civilizations
Bild
The attack on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo is a further escalation in the unequal confrontation between the West and the Islamic world, which is increasingly taking the form of a kulturkampf or clash of civilizations. We condemn the attack on Charlie Hebdo. At the same time, we do not join the ranks of the united front for the defence of the imperialist West and its “superior civilization”, which is emerging as a reaction to the attack. In France, this front ranges from the secularist left all across to the radical right of Jean-Marie Le Pen. As anti-imperialists, social revolutionaries and “enlightened”, rationally thinking people, we insist: 1. Not to forget the imperialist character of the present world order, which denies the majority of humankind any perspective … [read more]

Syria: preparing the conditions for a national assembly

Call by an all-sides working meeting
13/12/2014
Vienna call for peacebuilding in Syria: On October 16th and17th, 2014, a consultative meeting of the initiative www.peaceinsyria.org was held in Vienna, Austria. It was attended by a number of personalities who came from inside and outside of Syria and included political groups from the governmental and the opposition side, in addition to some members of the international group of the initiative. In the consultations among the Syrian participants three main points for the conference agenda were defined:
Bild
1. To find a national, reasonable political solution to the Syrian conflict. 2. To follow up on the points that were agreed upon at the first conference in Schlaining in March 2014, to examine their validity, and to present a practical plan for the continuation of the peace process in Syria. 3. To discuss the plan to hold a national, all-encompassing conference of all Syrian political forces in Damascus or somewhere in Syria. The two-days discussions were characterized by a seriousness and a spirit of responsibility, despite of some mutual accusations between the different groups who blamed each other for prolonging the war. Nonetheless, the determination of the participants to reach an agreement on some common points prompted them to identify the points of agreement, and to … [read more]

Cry from within "democratic" Moldova's prison

Appeal to the ambassadors of the EU and the US in the Republic of Moldova
13/12/2014 · by Paul Grigorchuk
Moldovan activist Paul Grigorchuk, a journalist and leader of the Social Forum of Moldova, wrote this powerful statement in prison, where he has been held since before the Nov. 30 parliamentary elections in Europe's poorest country: "So far they have only managed to get rid of dissidents".
Paul Grigorchuk
I ask independent media to publish this appeal, which I write while sitting in a Moldovan prison cell. To begin with (for those who still do not know), my criminal case was fabricated and all the criminal charges are politically motivated. I permit myself to make this appeal in the form of congratulations to representatives of the Western diplomatic missions. Today, they can celebrate the results of the recent parliamentary elections in Moldova. So I want to first of all congratulate the U.S. ambassador and head of the EU delegation in Moldova. Distinguished diplomats: While you provided all possible moral and financial support to the corrupt government of oligarchs and bribe-takers (in the opinion of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Moldova), the first political … [read more]

Euro dividing Europe

Meeting of the French anti-Euro movement
16/11/2014 · by Wilhelm Langthaler
From 8-11 November, 2014, the “autumn university” of MPEP (Political Movement for the Emancipation of the People) took place in Bordeaux. It was held under the motto: “New Dynamics for Republican Resistance against the EU, De-globalize in order to regain National Sovereignty”. Movements from Greece, Italy, Spain and Austria also exposed their views. General tendency: the popular anger against the austerity dictate by Berlin’s Euro regime is increasing and might soon explode.
Jacques Nikonoff, spokesman of MPEP
Demise of the French elites For the EU France is not one country among others. She neither belongs to the southern periphery such as Greece and Portugal, nor the peripheral centre like Italy. Paris used to be the union’s spiritus rector, its very demiurge. It was the French bureaucracy to forge the German-French axis, the European integration with the aim to build a supra-national regime of the capitalist classes. Together with their partners they wanted to institutionally strengthen themselves to wipe out the social and democratic gains achieved by the popular classes after WWII. The goal was a European quasi-state. In this way they wanted at the same time to control the stronger and potentially dangerous German neighbour. The formula: In exchange to adopting the German economic … [read more]

Ukrainian elections: quasi-parliament for the minority

31/10/2014 · by Kolesnik Dmitriy, Ukrainian web-journal Liva (liva.com.ua)
Ukrainian parliamentary elections, held on October 26, primarily showed the reality of the country’s split. The turnout was much lower than in all previous elections and the map of turnout shows the split and division of the country – the fact that is being constantly masked by Ukrainian nationalists and the authorities recently brought by them to power.
Turn-out
Half of the eligible voters boycotted the elections since they don’t see any use of it, since their will was again violated last February during the coup. Thus, in fact Ukraine has the parliament and president representing actually a part of the country – the fact that inevitably contributes to the escalation of the civil war. The whole election campaign was held in the atmosphere of intimidation and terror of the political opponents, that reminds the elections in Germany 1933 – “free and fair” despite the permanent attacks and terror against the Left, trade-unions and dissenters. The president Poroshenko greeted the results of elections because “at last there will be no more communists in the Parliament”. Actually, there will be no more any kind of Left or at least … [read more]

Turkey to let Kurds bleed

Facing the Kobani tragedy
7/10/2014 · by Wilhelm Langthaler
Since September 16, 2014, ISIS is attacking the town of Kobani which has been serving as the capital of the de-facto autonomous region self-administered by Syrian Kurds. Although their fierce resistance does matter and got a political impact, eventually they are doomed to fail for ISIS is disposing over far superior equipment. Turkey is idly standing by as the PYD/YPG is being defeated while US air strikes only symbolically target ISIS around Kobani -- different to their claims.
YPG Syrian Kurdish militia
The quintessence: none of the regional and global players want Kurdish self-rule in Northern Syria to survive! The decisive role is being played by Turkey: In Kobani Ankara got the final say. The Turkish calculus is obvious. If Rojava held on it would serve as a precedence enormously strengthening PKK. The pressure on Ankara to grant substantial autonomy also to its own millions of Kurds would increase massively. The US, on its part, is pushing Turkey, pillar state for the NATO, to join their alliance against the Islamic State (IS) thus defining the Jihadis to be the main enemy in the regional civil war. The US air campaign is turning Asad into the lesser evil potentially upgrading his regime even into a partner. This is, however, unacceptable for Turkey’s ruling AKP. For them … [read more]

No to new US bombs on the Middle East!

The peoples of the region need to deal with dictatorships and sectarianism on their own
24/9/2014 · by Wilhelm Langthaler
Once more the US has launched one of its notorious aerial bombing campaigns, this time on Iraq and Syria. The justification: to stop the genocide committed by the caliphate. With this move Washington is securing the broadest possible support ranging from Israel, the European Union, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iraq (with tacit support from Iran, Russia and even Assad), including all Kurdish factions, even the PKK and extending to a major part of the European left. Against the spectre of Jihadism a monstrous front is in the making encompassing political forces from the far-right to the far-left.
1) Iraq: The fox set to keep the geese As a start one needs to look at the results of the American war on Iraq: For two decades Washington starved Iraq by a genocidal embargo in order to suppress the worn-out remnants of formerly proud Arab nationalism. In a certain sense we can read it as the continuation of the US strategy of “dual containment” pitting Iraq and Iran against each other by maintaining the balance in the Golf war from 1980 to 1988 and weakening both. After the end of the war the US continued to keep both states in check. Driven by the hubris of the Neocons in 2003 the US went for “regime change” by direct military invasion. The result so far: their arch enemy Iran has been strengthened enormously and is now wielding decisive influence over Baghdad. This … [read more]

Ukraine: “White Europeans fighting Sovietness”

Nazi storm-troopers for the EU and austerity
22/9/2014 · by Dmitriy Kolesnik, editor of liva.com.ua
Ukraine, November 2013 – the president delays the signing of the free-trade Agreement with the EU attached with IMF demands to impose austerity measures and the next day Ukraine faced the pro-EU protests that (after gradual escalation) led to the coup and current civil war. But who played the leading role in those protests? Who was introduced to the Ukrainian government after the coup? And why too many Ukrainian citizens decided to raise the armed rebellion against new government?
Dmitriy Kolesnik
Despite all the attempts to silence Ukrainian neo-fascist and far-right groups, they cannot be hidden or whitewashed totally – the reports about rioting Nazi-ultras, neo-fascist battalions and pro-government far-right gangs in modern Ukraine can be met even in mainstream media. They are too notorious and too noticeable so that to turn a blind eye on their leading role in current Ukrainian crisis. Actually, without virulent neo-Nazis the coup in February and current war in East Ukraine couldn’t happen. Some analysts consider Ukrainian neo-Nazis as mere tools of Ukrainian oligarchs, while the other analysts are more worried and state that neo-Nazis wish to seize all the power and push through their dreams about ‘united white Europe’, uniting with their western colleagues into … [read more]

Odessa: Leftists again arrested and tortured

Kiev regimes leaves no political space for anti-Maidan forces
16/9/2014 · Ukraine Anti-Fascist Solidarity
While after his partial military defeat president Poroshenko is trying to offer some concessions to the Donbass popular rebellion like the special status, the attack on the leftist activists in Odessa shows that the Kiev regime continues to crack down on any democratic articulation.
Vlad Wojciechowski (torn T-shirt), May 2, 2014, after the union massacre
Left wing activists arrested and tortured in Odessa On the night of Friday, September 12, three left wing activists, members of Borotba, the Communist Party and the Communist Youth, were arrested in Odessa by the Internal Security Service (SBU), under the accusation of terrorism. Those arrested are Vladislav Wojciechowski, a member of Borotba and survivor of the Odessa massacre on May 2nd; Pavel Shishman, a member of the Communist Party of Ukraine; and Nikolay Popov, a member of the Communist Youth. A statement on Borotba’s site gives more details about the arrest of Wojciechowski: “During the search of the apartment where he lived, explosives were planted. Nazi “self-defense” paramilitaries participated in his arrest. Vladislav was beaten, and it is possible that … [read more]

Gaza balance sheet: resistance confirmed

Focus remaining on the embargo
11/9/2014 · by Wilhelm Langthaler
The most recent Israeli attack on Gaza resulted in yet another appalling massacre – one of too many through the history of Zionist colonialism. But beyond moral condemnation, what is the political result?
1. Israel’s war targets Israel never clearly stated the aims of its war. Maybe they even did not define them for themselves. In general it was about weakening the resistance and Hamas, riding on a wave of Zionist chauvinism which has taken hold of a sweeping majority in Israeli society. Right from the start the maximum goal, the annihilation of the armed resistance, was unrealistic and therefore not proclaimed. The destruction of several tunnel systems served both as a justification for the assault as well as for its termination. In any case an accurate evaluation of the war’s result needs to take into account its extraordinary asymmetric character. 2. Resistance confirmed Destruction in Gaza is massive. There are thousands of dead and wounded. Human misery is … [read more]

Euro exit!

Several leaders from European progressive organizations come out in favour of withdrawal from the euro and the European Union
30/8/2014
The National Coordination of the Italian Left against the Euro held its "European Forum 2014" in Assisi (Italy) from 20 to 24 August 2014 which brought together a large number of participants, including countries in the European Union but also Ukraine and Russia. On this occasion the leaders of several progressive political organizations from within the European Union adopted a declaration in favour of withdrawing from the euro and the European Union.
Bild
In all countries of the EU and especially in the euro zone, violent anti-social policies are pursued relentlessly by the European Union and its member governments: massive decline in social spending, wage deflation by blocking wages, lower payroll taxes, unjustified subsidies to large corporations supposedly to create jobs, privatization, dismantling of public services and social security, financialization of the economy and public budgets ... The result is an exponential increase in mass unemployment and lack of job security. The origin of this is to be found in the policies of the European Union, fully frozen by the Lisbon Treaty. The latter is based on all the neoliberal dogmas that have already demonstrated their detrimental impact on the interests of the popular and middle … [read more]

Palestinian MP Jarrar resists expulsion

Urgent Appeal

Occupied Ramallah, 20 August 2014 - The Israeli Military Governor in the West Bank has signed a military order expelling Palestinian Legislative Council Member and Addameer board member Khalida Jarrar to Jericho for a period of six months, with immediate effect.
Khalida Jarrar Solidariy Campaign
At 1.30 A.M on 20 August 2014 approximately 50 Israeli occupying soldiers surrounded Jarrar's home in Ramallah. An Israeli captain then proceeded to hand Jarrar an order which states that Jarrar must not leave the district of Jericho for the next six months and can only leave with the express permission of the Israeli military commander in the West Bank. Accompanying the order was a map outlining the boundaries of Jericho district. The order states, based on secret information, that Jarrar is a threat to the security of the area. She was given 24 hours to leave Ramallah. Jarrar refused to sign the order. Jarrar was elected to the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) in January 2006 and has continued to serve as an elected representative ever since. She is also the Palestinian … [read more]

Hungary’s Authoritarian Capitalism

Speech delivered by Mihaly Koltai at the European Forum "Beyond the Euro - there is an alternative", 20-24 August 2014, Assisi, Italy.
Quotes ’our starting point is the fact that until now we have known three forms of state organisation: the nation state, the liberal state and the welfare state. And the question is, what’s next? The Hungarian answer to this question is that the era of the work-based state is approaching. We want to organise a work-based society that, as I have just mentioned, undertakes the odium of stating that it is not liberal in character. [...] societies that are built on the state organisation principle of liberal democracy will probably be incapable of maintaining their global competitiveness in the upcoming decades and will instead probably be scaled down unless they are capable of changing themselves significantly. [...] It is better to acknowledge, even if it is difficult, that the … [read more]

Money and the primacy of politics

The Euro as the Agenda of Capitalist Elites and the Political Consequences
27/8/2014 · by Albert F. Reiterer
Speech held by Albert F. Reiterer at the European Forum "Beyond the Euro - there is an alternative", 20-24 August 2014, Assisi, Italy.
Since the start of E(E)C / EU the monetary union was a paramount goal in this political project of Western European industrial and financial capitalists. However, after the Treaty of Rome was established, there were more primary short-run targets to long for, and the idea of a common currency remained a rather abstract or a rhetorical notion for some time. But even in those times it figured as a darling of conservative ideologues, and of some ambitious politicians, too. Anyway, the Werner- and the Tindemans-report remained dead letter. Helmut Schmidt and V. Giscard d'Estaing personally tried to draft a scheme for a European Monetary System in 1978, but it failed miserably. To use the terms of an old debate in the left movement, we have to revisit imperialism as the nec plus ultra of … [read more]

Gaza: the wretched of the earth resisting

Hamas’s steadfastness might prompt Israel to further escalate the attack
30/7/2014 · by Wilhelm Langthaler
Israel’s ground assault on Gaza is meeting severe resistance – as has been the case many times before. Despite massive destruction and a death toll exceeding one thousand – mainly civilians – the resistance and Hamas remain combative. They rejected a capitulation agreement put forward by Egypt and endorsed by Israel. Lifting the embargo remains the central and immediate Palestinian demand as the base for a ceasefire. This is legitimate and must be supported by democrats across the globe.
1) Israel needs to present a success The current attack on Gaza has been growing into an outright showdown to tilt an equilibrium that is no more acceptable to either side. In this extremely asymmetric war one can assume that if the Zionist Goliath does not succeed in substantially weakening Hamas, the battle might turn into an affirmation of the Palestinian David. Israel has been proclaiming the destruction of Hamas, the political and military force dominating the resistance, at least for the past two decades – to no avail. Also this time there is no indication that would suggest such an outcome. The Palestinian resistance has been a world-shaking event ever since serving as an emblem of anti-imperialist popular struggles. This is one of the reasons why the Israeli Army well … [read more]

Iraqi Revolution and the specter of jihadist extremism

As they did in the past Iraqis refuse to surrender their land to the radicals
20/6/2014 · Pedro Rojo*, IraqSolidaridad
"The Military Council of the Revolution, formed by the former Iraqi army military, youth of the revolution and tribal members, is coordinating the military struggle of different groups against the Maliki government, heir to the political system imposed by the U.S. occupation".
Following article was kindly translated from Spanish by John Catalinotto of Workers World www.workers.org in New York. We publish it because it plausibly points out that the military takeover of Northern Iraq by ISIS forces is intertwined with a popular rebellion and much broader than the Jihadi phenomenon. We do, however, not share the optimism that Daesh will be expelled as an alien force. Conversely we believe that Jihadism could sink deep popular roots and sectarianism from both sides has infected Iraqi society more than any other Arab country. None of the major forces involved got an instrument against sectarianism. And the Syrian events are showing the predominant dynamics of the region which transformed a supra-confessional democratic popular rebellion into a sectarian … [read more]

Iraqi Resistance’s revenge

Maliki’s sectarian regime prompting a sectarian response
17/6/2014 · by Wilhelm Langthaler
ISIL’s success is evident. In less than one week they could conquer half of northern Iraq nearly without combat. Large parts of the Sunni population regard Baghdad’s Shia government as their prime foe. Actually it was a Sunni coalition which pushed back the pro-Iranian regime, largely congruent with the Iraqi resistance against the US occupation ten years back.
1) Not only ISIL Mosul and Tikrit could fall without struggle a) because the Iraqi army was not ready to fight and b) because the local population did not mount any resistance or even supported the insurgency. Otherwise it would be impossible to take such large swaths of land with only several thousands of fighters without heavy equipment. 2) Old resistance and new popular uprising Which forces are involved? Beside the Jihadis there is on one hand the old army and the Baath party. Izzat al Durri, the highest ranking officer of Saddam carrying on, serves as its symbolic figure. He is leading the Naqshbandiya order which serves as an ideological shield bridging the gap between Arab nationalism and Islamism. On the other hand there are tribal structures which have been regaining … [read more]
